Marshall, James

Make Your Own Japanese Clothes: patterns and ideas for modern wear, by John Marshall.  Kodansha International; Tokyo, New York: 1988.  ISBN 978-0-87011-865-4

This book contains a wealth of information about Japanese clothing.  Though it is a source for learning how to actually make Japanese clothing using 45" fabric, Mr. Marshall's explanations also cover sewing techniques, symbolism, tools, types of garments, detailed drawings, how to tie a haori tie, and much more.

If you are looking for in depth information about Japanese clothing construction, this is an excellent book for you.  If you actually want to make the clothing, the book will be more useful to experienced sewers than to novice sewers.  Though complicated, I found the directions to be quite clear.
